Ransomware has emerged as a significant threat, affecting businesses and individuals across India. The country has witnessed a massive surge in ransomware attacks, leading to significant financial losses and reputational damage.

We delve into the seven most significant ransomware attacks that have struck India recently. We will shed light on the magnitude of their impact and the lessons learned from each incident.

1. The AIIMS Attack:  Hackers recently targeted AIIMS (All India Institute Of Medical Science) Delhi, the premier medical institution of India, causing server shutdowns and disrupting critical health services. Patient data was also potentially compromised, which highlighted the dangers of cyberattacks on health care. This was a big blow to India’s healthcare system. It exposed the vulnerabilities of healthcare institutions and emphasized the urgent need for stronger cybersecurity measures. This is by far the most recent ransomware attack in India that shook up the entire healthcare industry.

2. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Power Utility Systems Attack: Southern states Telangana and Andhra Pradesh fell victim to a ransomware attack on their power utility systems, resulting in widespread chaos. The malicious virus took down all the servers until the glitch was resolved. Since the computer systems of the two states were interlinked, the virus spread quickly, leading to a complete shutdown of all systems

3. Haryana Power Distribution Ransomware Attack: Hackers infiltrated Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam, stealing customer billing data. The attackers in return demanded a hefty ransom amount of $10 million in exchange for returning the stolen data. This attack underscored the critical importance of safeguarding sensitive customer information.

4.WannaCry: The notorious WannaCry ransomware attack affected over 2 lakh computer systems, affecting Indian banks and enterprises in many states including Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

5. Mirai Botnet Malware Attack: Another shocking ransomware attack in India was the Mirai botnet malware attack. This botnet malware targeted home routers and IoT devices specifically, affecting 2.5 million IoT devices. The malware exploited unpatched vulnerabilities to access networks and systems.

6. Petya: India found itself among the top 10 countries hit by the Petya ransomware attack. Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai, one of India’s largest seaports suffered a computer lockdown recently, causing significant disruptions to operations.

7. BSNL Malware Attack: The state-owned telecom operator BSNL encountered a major malware attack, rendering nearly 2,0000 broadband modems dysfunctional. Sixty thousand modems fell victim to the assault, leaving an indelible mark on the Telecom Circle.
